Vamana is one of the five core purification therapies of Panchkarma, focusing on the elimination of excess **Kapha dosha** (water and earth element) from the upper gastrointestinal tract, stomach, and respiratory channels. Under this therapeutic procedure, toxins accumulated in the upper torso are mobilized and expelled through therapeutically induced, controlled emesis.
In Ayurveda, the stomach is considered the primary seat of Kapha dosha. By systematically cleansing this zone, Vamana resolves chronic metabolic sluggishness and congestion, rejuvenating the chest and neck areas.
The patient undergoes **Snehapana** (daily consumption of medicated ghee in increasing quantities) for 3 to 7 days to liquefy lipid-bound toxins. This is followed by external body oil massage (Abhyanga) and herbal steam (Swedana) to channel those toxins to the stomach cavity.
Early in the morning, during the natural Kapha-dominant period, the patient is administered natural emetic concoctions made of Madanaphala (Emetic nut), Licorice, Honey, and Vacha (Sweet flag) under the close supervision of Dr. Upasana Thakur. Expelled material is clinically monitored.
Immediately following emesis, the patient undergoes **Dhumapana** (inhalation of medicated herbal smoke) to dry the sinuses. Next, a customized diet schedule (**Samsarjana Krama**) spanning 3 to 7 days is prescribed, beginning with warm thin rice water, to gradually bring the digestive capacity (Agni) back to its full strength.
Vamana therapy is highly beneficial for treating several chronic imbalances:
Vamana requires close diagnostic screening. Dr. Upasana Thakur evaluates cardiovascular stability, age, strength, and dosha index prior to clearing a patient for Vamana.
