Virechana is a highly structured purgation therapy designed to eliminate excess **Pitta dosha** (fire and water elements) from the lower gastrointestinal tract, small intestine, liver, and gallbladder. Under this medical protocol, heat-inducing metabolic impurities (Ama) are systematically directed to the intestines and safely eliminated.
Pitta dosha regulates metabolism, blood composition, and body temperature. When Pitta accumulates, it results in systemic inflammation, skin toxicities, hyperacidity, and liver congestion. Virechana works as a comprehensive cooling detox, purifying the blood and tissues.
The treatment starts with 3 to 7 days of **Snehapana** (consuming warm medicated ghee containing Pitta-soothing herbs like Triphala or Tikta Ghrita). Once internal lubrication is complete, the patient receives full body herbal massages (Abhyanga) and dry heat therapy to soften toxins and guide them to the gut.
On the morning of the procedure, after evaluating the patient's vitals, a specific dose of natural, milk-based laxatives or herbal powders (such as Trivrit or Castor oil decoction) is administered. The patient undergoes controlled elimination rounds. Throughout the day, body temperature, bowel movements, and mental calm are closely supervised.
To restore the digestive fire which naturally slows down during purgation, a special diet schedule (**Samsarjana Krama**) is implemented. The patient shifts slowly from plain gruels to thick lentil soups, and finally back to balanced solids over 3 to 5 days.
Virechana is widely recommended for treating several Pitta-based conditions:
Virechana is a deep therapy. Dr. Upasana Thakur evaluates a patient's physical strength, bowel tendencies (Krudha/Mrudu Kostha), and inflammatory index to calculate precise oil and herb dosages.
